Envision Downtown is a public/private partnership between the Mayor's Office and the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership formed to accelerate Downtown's economic growth and competitiveness. Envision's mission is to advance mobility and livability in Pittsburgh's central neighborhoods, by making it safer, more attractive and convenient for everyone to get to, through and around Downtown. The initiative leverages a team of committed civic leaders and a robust data development program to implement a series of short-term, accelerated infrastructure projects with the goal of informing longer-term transformation changes to the City's mobility networks.
Broadly, the initiative is focused on the area between the West End Bridge, 16th Street Bridge and the 10th Street Bridge. Envision maintains a strong focus on the Golden Triangle as well as improving connections to successful adjacent neighborhoods including the Northside, near Strip District, Hill District, Uptown and the Southside. Connections between Downtown and the region's innovation hub in Oakland are also a priority for improvement.
The initiative's work is focused on improving pedestrian safety, removing barriers for persons with disabilities, investing in transit rider amenities, making it safer to bike and reducing traffic congestion. This charge is particularly important at this moment as Downtown's infrastructure has remained mostly static despite the rapid evolution of the neighborhood with growth in the residential population, additional nightlife and cultural amenities, and a continued presence as the major economic driver for the region.
Envision Downtown will also coordinate deployment of innovative hardware and software solutions, especially those developed in Western Pennsylvania, to position Pittsburgh as a hub for "smart city" technology development. Technology deployment will focus on advanced traffic control systems, sustainability and resilience, and transit and traffic efficiency.
